Welcome to Intensive Reading! I am so excited to start out the new 2009-2010 school year with a great group of Freshmen. This page has ben created to give you a little more information about me.
Columbia County has always been my home, and I chose to stay and raise my own family here in Lake City. I graduated from Columbia High School in 1993, and continued my education at Lake City Community College and then at St. Leo University. I earned a BA in Psychology and worked for many years as a Substance Abuse and Anger Management Counselor, as well as inthe Social Work field. I have always had a desire to work with and help people, and since learning to read, I have loved books. Teaching Intensive Reading is a perfect way to combine these two areas. I am in my third year of teaching Intensive Reading at Columbia High School, and can't see myself doing anything else.
My husband and I are the proud parents of four wonderful children: Ashlei, who is currently a Senior at Columbia High School; Brandon, who is in the 4th grade; Kyrsten, who is in the 2nd grade; and Christian, who is in the 1st grade. My family also includes a loyal and loving dog, three cats (although this number increases from time to time....we tend to "adopt" or be "adopted" by cats and kittens), and three teddy bear hamsters. I have two younger brothers, who both graduated from CHS as well. Dr. Eston Albury (Darcy) is a chiropractor in Savannah and SSgt. Jody Albury is currently serving our great country in the United States Air Force.
I welcome any questions or concerns that parents and students may have. The best way to contact me is by e-mail me at m.owens@firn.edu . I will answer your e-mail as soon as I can, but I do not check my e-mail during student instructional time. Please allow 24 hours for a response. If you have a need to contact me sooner, you may call CHS at 755-8080 x-185 and leave a message. I am also available for parent conferences. If you would like to schedule a parent conference, please call the Guidance Deaprtment at CHS and they will be able to set up a time and date.
I am looking forward to a great year with many new learning experiences for the students!
